PERSONAL PRESENCE AT THE PIANO
is an integral part of a good performance.
Your audience hears you AND sees you.

At the Piano

  • Before you begin, take a moment to ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR AUDIENCE by placing your hand on the piano, looking at the audience, and giving a bow.

  • Once seated, take a moment to adjust your bench so that it is in the proper place for your height and style of playing.

  • Stay centered on the bench. Do not slide your hips. Do not swing your feet. If you make a mistake, move forward without showing displeasure on your face.

  • ENJOY the performance. Your music is a gift to the audience. Give it freely and with joy.

  • Once you have finished playing, do not quickly slide off the bench and dash for your seat. Lift your hands. Place them in your lap. Stand up and bow to the audience. Allow the audience to acknowledge your performance with applause.

Your Appearance

  • REQUIRED: Shoes should have no more than a one inch heel and should be thin soled to allow good pedal feel. Purchasing a pair of piano flats (similar to ballet flats) is highly recommended.

  • Sunday dress is most appropriate for performances unless otherwise directed. Do not choose clothing that is overly distracting-- such as large floral prints or excessive accessories. You want to shine-- not your clothes.

  • Boys should wear dress shirts, ties and slacks. Jackets are optional.

  • Girls should choose dresses that are comfortable and fall below the knee. Dresses should not be strapless or have spaghetti straps. If choosing a dress of this style, please wear a cardigan or dress sweater when performing.

  • Nails should be trimmed and clean. No nail polish please.

  • No jewelry.

  • Hair should be pulled back or cut away from the face.

  • Performance style makeup is not encouraged. However, a light lip balm and some accent to the eyes is appropriate for girls.
